Plastic bags of cat food and cat litter, toilet paper, feces and cat fur, latex and glitter.
If in nature excrement forms part of the life cycle as nourishment for plants, in the city it symbolizes the end of a process. Fecal Beauty takes this feeling of "end of life" and reanimates it in the form of a dress. In this way, the artist has remodelled their passion for costumes with the most produced and least used substance found in their home: cat shit. Gioia Maini was born in Bologna, Italy, and has lived for six years in Barcelona. They dedicate Themself to wardrobes for performing arts and audiovisual arts and teaches clothing "re-styling" and up-cycling.
Special thanks to Katzy.
Gioia Maini, calculating all that they had invested in their cat Katzy, asked for something more in exchange than affection and purring. The reply: a lot of shit. Exploring the transformative possibilities of this abundant amount of faecal matter and inspired by the memory of a "necklace of poop pearls" linked by a plastic thread that their cat had accidentally swallowed, they began to work on the idea of making a garment from the last of all substances. “I wanted to bring a dead thing back to life: converting excrement into art.”
During the process of revitalization, the artist passed through various emotional states that resulted in masochistic feelings and existential reflections on the cycle of life, love and death. The result is a dress with a design of fine lines but rich in decorative elaboration. It can be worn and above all it does not smell bad.
Fecal Beauty is not a direct provocation in the style of Piero Manzoni with his Artist's Shit but a touch of attention to the model of society in which we are immersed.
FECAL BEAUTY is also a VIDEO DOCUMENTARY produced by: La Cala Studio feat. Albert Soler
